On an AIX 7 platform, these steps were useful for enabling SNMP
In /etc/snmpdv3.conf, change “public” to the name of the SNMP community & uncomment the line starting #COMMUNITY:
VACM_GROUP group1 SNMPv1 public -
TARGET_PARAMETERS trapparms1 SNMPv1 SNMPv1 public noAuthNoPriv -
#COMMUNITY public public noAuthNoPriv 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
On this line, change “excluded” to “included”:
VACM_VIEW defaultView 1.3.6.1.4.1.2.6.191 - excluded -
run the following commands (chssys in /usr/sbin)
chssys -s aixmibd -a "-c SNMP_Community"
chssys -s hostmibd -a "-c SNMP_Community"
chssys -s snmpmibd -a "-c SNMP_Community"
stopsrc -s aixmibd;stopsrc -s hostmibd;stopsrc -s snmpmibd
stopsrc -s snmpd
startsrc -s snmpd
startsrc -s aixmibd;startsrc -s hostmibd; startsrc -s snmpmibd
To verify, use ps and look for 3 processes with the expected community string:
ps -ef |grep mibd
To revert the change to the community name, update the snmpdv3.conf file and run the following command:
chssys -s aixmibd -a ""
SNMP can be tested locally using the snmpinfo command:
snmpinfo -md -v -c SNMP_Community system
